SUMMER MEMORY

Gazebo on Dennis Green

It’s time to bundle up on the porch in the morning as summer slips past. In the garden, the pink gaura plant is still glorious, rosy sedum is in bloom, and there are fat buds on the Montauk daisies. But the birds are molting to their winter dress and the leaves are touched with color.

September is one of the most beautiful months on Cape Cod . . . but summer is slipping away.

One of my best summer memories is a concert we attended with friends on the Dennis Green. The band, Crabgrass, was playing in the gazebo to a large semicircle of gyrating fans. The foot-stomping bluegrass went on for an hour and a half. Two women brought their knitting, one group sipped wine and ate hors d’oeuvres packed in a picnic basket, and every child, from infant on up, danced their own uninhibited interpretation of the music. One little blonde girl with two missing front teeth danced an Irish jig, which was just right with the folksy beat of the bluegrass music. It was one of those soft evenings with a touch of cool after a perfect warm day. It was pure Americana. I felt as if I was sitting in a Norman Rockwell painting. This scene will definitely end up in one of my novels!

This year the Crabgrass band was invited to play warm-up for the Boston Pops annual concert on the Cape. If you have a chance to attend one of the Crabgrass band concerts, don’t miss it. Their schedule is on their website: http://www.crabgrassbluegrass.com. I guarantee you will not sit still and you will laugh!

  1. What a gorgeous evocation of late summer on the Cape (not to mention a delightful band)! You have such a gift for description…I can absolutely feel the beauty of it all. Thanks, from one of your Florida friends–down here, it’s hot, humid, and rainy, so having a moment sharing Cape Cod through your words was lovely!

  2. So good to warm these cool evenings with good memories of all the special summer events! Your description brought a smile as I pictured that little Irish lass!

  3. Laurel and Brenda

As a non-resident of Cape Cod – we can certainly understand your love for the area and all it provides. We always enjoy reading your blog and look forward to your Florida writings.
We wish you good luck as you write the Great American novel…..

  4. And I ask myself, “Why don’t I live there?”

  5. Sounds like a perfect way to spend a lovely late summer day. We went to a Sergio Franci concert (minus Sergio) on his estate in Stonington, CT a couple of weeks ago. It was a great day. Miss those summer nights. LOL

  6. What a gift you have for bringing a little extra joy to our day. Finding your latest entry is like opening a Hersey’s kiss, you absolutely know it’s going to be delicious and it always leaves us wanting more. When we’re not laughing, we are smiling wide. Thanks Gerri !!
